The 19th annual Food Allergy Ball, which benefits Food Allergy Research and Education, was Dec. 5 at the Waldorf Astoria. The Berggruen Institute, a philosophical think tank based in Los Angeles, awarded the inaugural Berggruen Prize on Dec. 1 to the Canadian philosopher Charles Taylor at the New York Public Library; the $1 million award recognizes a living thinker of great influence. The Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory honored Alan Alda and P. Roy Vaglos at its Double Helix Medals ceremony Dec. 1 at the American Museum of Natural History. And the Committee to Protect Journalists held its International Press Freedom Awards on Nov. 22 at the Waldorf Astoria.
