LIVERPOOL, England — Liverpool fired Manager Brendan Rodgers, who had been in charge of the club for three years.

The dismissal came after a 1-1 Premier League draw in the Merseyside derby against Everton on Sunday.

In the 2013-14 season, Liverpool came close to winning the title in England’s top league for the first time since 1990, but the team was way off the pace last season.

Liverpool’s ownership group said that “although this has been a difficult decision, we believe it provides us with the best opportunity for success on the pitch.”

■ The Atlético Madrid substitute Luciano Vietto scored a late goal to salvage a 1-1 draw with visiting Real Madrid, which missed a chance to reclaim the lead in the top Spanish league. Real Madrid was left 1 point behind first-place Villarreal, which lost, 1-0, at Levante.

■ Robert Lewandowski scored twice as host Bayern Munich routed Borussia Dortmund, 5-1, to open a 7-point lead in the Bundesliga. Thomas Müller added two goals for Bayern, which won its eighth straight game to start the season and handed second-place Dortmund its first loss.
