The actress Gina Rodriguez has responded to the #OscarsSoWhite controversy with her own call to action for Latino audiences.

“With all this Oscar talk and lack of diversity I decided to start a movement and speak from the perspective of a Latina American who desires to see more Latinos on screen,” Ms. Rodriguez, the star of “Jane the Virgin,” has written on her Instagram account. “There are 55 million Latinos in this country and although we all come from various backgrounds, our unity can make a movie explode at the box office or a TV show soar to the highest viewers possible.”

She named her social media campaign #MovementMondays, and called on moviegoers and TV watchers to flock to entertainment that prominently features Latino artists, like “Ex Machina,” starring Oscar Isaac, who is of Guatemalan and Cuban descent and who gave what she called “an Oscar worthy performance” in that sci-fi film.

Ms. Rodriguez said she planned to highlight a Latino performer each Monday in an effort to support their work, and counter an argument she hears in Hollywood, that Latinos don’t turn out to see each other on screen.

“Right now there isn’t one Latino that can greenlight a movie,” she wrote, adding, “Let’s start making noise with where it matters most, where we put our dollars.”
