SpiceRoads Cycle Tours is starting a hike-and-bike trip to southern Madagascar that will take in the African island nation’s geography, plants, animals and culture.

The 15-day itinerary includes visits with the Zafimaniry people, whose wood carving knowledge is listed as a Unesco Intangible Cultural Heritage, and rides past crater lakes, rice paddies, vineyards and beaches.

“Biking from the east to the west coast, cyclists will encounter an amazing variety of lemurs, and hiking through national parks will bring them even closer to nature and a good chance of spotting the world’s smallest and biggest chameleons,” said Patricia Weismantel, a product manager for SpiceRoads.

Accommodations are at small hotels, from a riverside lodge to a beach resort.

Departures are scheduled for late August, September and October. The cost is $3,250 a person; single supplement and bike hire fees are extra. Reservations can be made at spiceroads.com.
